How the IB diploma total is calculated

IB total = six subject grades + core bonus points

IB diploma points
PartPoints
Six subjects, 1 to 7 eachUp to 42
Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge bonus pointsUp to 3
TotalUp to 45

Example: subject grades of 6, 6, 5, 5, 6 and 7 add up to 35. With 2 bonus points from the core, the total is 37.

The pass mark and the other conditions

You need at least 24 points to be awarded the diploma, but a total of 24 or more is not enough on its own. The IB also sets conditions, and failing any one of them can mean no diploma even above 24. Among them are:

  • Completing all the CAS requirements.
  • Not receiving a grade of 1 in any subject.
  • Not receiving a grade of E for the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge.
  • Minimum points in your Higher Level and Standard Level subjects.
  • Limits on how many grades of 2 or 3 you can have.

The exact rules are in the IB’s own publications for your year, so read them for your programme.

How the bonus points work

The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are each graded from A to E, and the pair of grades gives from 0 to 3 bonus points. Strong grades on both give 3 points, middling grades give 1 or 2, and an E on either is a failing condition. A weak core can cost points you could have had, so it is worth the same effort as a subject.

How a subject grade is made

Each subject grade from 1 to 7 combines your internal assessment, which your teacher marks and the IB moderates, with your final exams. The weights differ by subject, and the grade boundaries are set by the IB after each exam session, so the same raw percentage can be a different grade in different subjects and years. To see how each part combines inside one subject, use the weighted grade calculator.

Predicted versus final grades

Predicted grades are your teachers’ estimates and are the ones universities see when you apply. Final grades are awarded in July or in January, depending on your exam session. Use predicted grades in this calculator for planning, and your real results afterwards.

Your IB class grades

Your school’s reports during the course are separate from the final IB grade. To work out a class grade from your school gradebook, use the standard calculator or read how to calculate your grade in a class.
