How to calculate your grade

Your class grade is the share of the available points you have earned. Add up the points you earned on every graded assignment, add up the points possible, divide earned by possible and multiply by 100.

Class grade = points earned ÷ points possible × 100

For example, scores of 18 out of 20, 45 out of 50 and 88 out of 100 give 151 out of 170 points, which is 88.8%. Do not average the percentages, because the 100-point assignment counts for more than the others. The calculator above does this for you and shows your letter grade next to the total.

Test and exam grades

For a single test or exam, divide the questions you got right, or the points you earned, by the total and multiply by 100. A 42 out of 50 is 84%. Add the test as an assignment to see how it changes your class grade, or add an upcoming exam and try different scores to see what you need.

Weighted classes

If your syllabus gives categories such as homework, quizzes and exams a set percentage of the grade, switch to the College Calculator. It calculates grades with weights from each category’s percentage.
