What Do I Need on My Final?
Last updated: October 13, 2026
To find the score you need on a final exam, you need three numbers: your current grade, how much the final is worth, and the grade you want in the class. Type them in below and the calculator shows the exam score that gets you there. The rest of this guide explains the formula, so you can check the answer by hand.
The final exam grade formula
Score needed = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Write the final weight as a decimal (25% is 0.25). Your current grade should include everything in the class except the final. The part of your grade that is already earned shrinks to fit the remaining share, and the final has to make up the difference.
- Multiply your current grade by the share of the class that is already graded (1 minus the final’s weight).
- Subtract that from the grade you want.
- Divide what is left by the final’s weight. That is the score you need on the exam.
Worked examples
Example 1. You have an 85% now, the final is worth 25%, and you want an 80% in the class.
- 85 × (1 − 0.25) = 63.75
- 80 − 63.75 = 16.25
- 16.25 ÷ 0.25 = 65
You need a 65% on the final.
Example 2. You have a 78%, the final is worth 20%, and you want an 80%. 78 × 0.80 = 62.4, then 80 − 62.4 = 17.6, and 17.6 ÷ 0.20 = 88. You need an 88% on the final, so this goal takes a strong exam.
Example 3. You have an 85%, the final is worth 25%, and you want a 90%. The same steps give 105%. That is above 100%, so a 90 is only reachable if extra credit is available. If it is not, a lower goal such as an 89 or an 88 is the realistic target.
What you need on the final by exam weight
The more the final is worth, the more room it has to move your grade, in both directions. This table starts from an 85% current grade and shows the score needed for three different goals. Anything over 100% is out of reach without extra credit.
| Final exam weight | Needed for an 80% class grade | Needed for an 85% class grade | Needed for a 90% class grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 35% | 85% | 135% |
| 15% | 51.7% | 85% | 118.3% |
| 20% | 60% | 85% | 110% |
| 25% | 65% | 85% | 105% |
| 30% | 68.3% | 85% | 101.7% |
| 40% | 72.5% | 85% | 97.5% |
| 50% | 75% | 85% | 95% |
How to find your current grade before the final
The formula needs your grade without the final. How you get it depends on how your class is graded.
- Points-based class. Add up the points you earned and the points possible so far, then divide. See how to calculate your grade in a class.
- Weighted categories. Add up the weighted points for every category except the final, then divide by the total weight of those categories. Example: homework 95% at 20%, quizzes 85% at 20% and midterms 80% at 40% give 19 + 17 + 32 = 68. Those categories are worth 80% of the class, so 68 ÷ 0.80 = 85%. See how to calculate a weighted grade.
If your class is points-based and the final is just one big assignment, skip the percentages and use points. With 340 out of 400 points and a 100-point final, a goal of 85% needs 0.85 × 500 = 425 total points, so you need 425 − 340 = 85 points on the final.
College final grade calculator tips
College finals are often worth between 20% and 40% of the grade, and some courses are graded almost entirely on exams. A few things are worth checking in your syllabus before you rely on the number:
- Exam weight. Look for the percentage in the grading breakdown, not the points. If a midterm and a final are listed together, enter only the final.
- Replace-lowest policies. Some courses let a strong final replace a weaker midterm, which changes the weights after the fact.
- Minimum-score rules. Some courses require a passing grade on the final itself, separate from the class grade.
- Curves. The calculator uses the final score you expect to be entered. If the exam is curved, plan with the raw score you can control.

If your goal needs more than 100%
When the answer is over 100%, the goal is out of reach on the exam alone. Your options are to ask about extra credit, check whether a lower exam score can be dropped or replaced, or aim for the next grade down. Use the what-if method to see where a realistic score lands.
Keep in mind
- The result is an estimate. Your teacher’s rounding and any dropped scores can change it slightly.
- If some assignments are still ungraded, work out your current grade without them first.
- Not sure what your current grade is? Paste your gradebook into the calculator and the table fills in on its own.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need on my final to pass the class?
Use your passing grade as the goal. If a 60% is passing, enter 60 as the grade you want. If the result is zero or negative, you already have enough, because even a 0% on the final keeps you at or above that grade.
How much is a final exam usually worth?
It varies a lot. Many classes weight the final between 10% and 30% of the class grade, and some college courses weight it at 40% or more. Your syllabus has the exact number.
Can a final exam change my grade by a full letter?
Yes, especially if it is worth 25% or more. A 100% on a heavy final can raise a grade several points, and a very low score can lower it by the same amount.
Does this work if my class uses points instead of percentages?
Yes. Divide your points earned by points possible to get a percentage, then enter the final’s share of the total points as its weight. A 100-point final in a class with 500 total points is a 20% weight.
