How to Calculate Your Semester Grade Without the Final
Last updated: October 13, 2026
There are two different questions behind “how do I calculate my semester grade without the final?” In the first, the final has not happened yet and you want to know where you stand. In the second, you are exempt from the final, or the class has none, and the grade has to be worked out from everything else. Both use the same idea: only count what has been graded.
Case 1: the final has not happened yet
Your grade so far is the weighted points you have, divided by the combined weight of the parts that are graded. A typical semester might count each quarter or term as 40% and the final as 20%. Example: you have an 88% for the first quarter and an 82% for the second.
- First quarter: 88 × 0.40 = 35.2
- Second quarter: 82 × 0.40 = 32.8
- Weighted points so far: 35.2 + 32.8 = 68
- Combined weight so far: 0.40 + 0.40 = 0.80
- 68 ÷ 0.80 = 85
Your semester grade without the final is 85%.
What the final could do to that grade
The 68 weighted points are already banked. The final adds its score times its weight on top of them, so the semester grade is 68 + 0.20 × (final score).
- Final of 70: 68 + 14 = 82%
- Final of 85: 68 + 17 = 85%
- Final of 100: 68 + 20 = 88%
To work backwards from a goal, use what do I need on my final.
Case 2: you are exempt from the final
If you skip the final, the usual approach is to treat the remaining parts as the whole grade. That means dividing by their combined weight, exactly as in case 1. In the example above, an exemption gives 85%, the average of the two quarters. Schools set their own exemption rules, so check whether your school uses this method or applies the grade differently. Some do not allow an exemption to lower the grade, and some only exempt students with a minimum grade or attendance record.
Points-based classes
If the final is just a large assignment in a total-points class, leave it out of both totals. With 340 out of 400 points before a 100-point final, your grade without it is 340 ÷ 400 = 85%. Adding a final score s gives (340 + s) ÷ 500.
Common mistakes
- Counting the final as a zero. An ungraded final is not a zero. Leave it out until the score exists.
- Forgetting to divide by the combined weight. 68 on its own would read as a 68%. It is 68 out of 80 possible weighted points.
- Mixing up quarter and semester weights. Check the syllabus or handbook for how quarters and the final combine.

Paste your gradebook into the calculator, or add your quarters and the final as assignments, and leave the final blank until it is graded. The college calculator handles percentage weights directly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my semester grade before the final?
Add up the weighted points for the graded parts and divide by their combined weight. With two quarters at 40% each scoring 88 and 82, that is 68 ÷ 0.80 = 85%.
How do I calculate my semester grade if I am exempt from the final?
Divide the weighted points from the remaining parts by their combined weight, which treats them as the whole grade. Check your school’s exemption policy, since some use a different rule.
How much can the final change my semester grade?
By the weight times the score. With a 20% final, a 100 adds 20 points to your weighted total and a 0 adds none, so the whole range from the lowest to the highest possible score is 20 points wide.
